Ukrainian president tests positive for coronavirus

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has tested positive for the coronavirus and will go into self-isolation, he said in a tweet on Monday.

“There are no lucky people for whom #COVID19 does not pose a threat. Despite all the quarantine measures, I received a positive test,” said Zelenskiy. “I feel good & take a lot of vitamins. Promise to isolate myself, but keep working. I will overcome COVID19 as most people do. It’s gonna be fine!”

In June, he said that he had considered infecting himself with the coronavirus to prove to Ukrainians that “it’s not the plague.”

“We’ve forgotten now, but at the very beginning there was a very scary moment when everyone thought we’d all die,” Zelenskiy said at the time. “The only thing that stopped me is that someone said that people might say it’s a PR stunt.”

Later that month, his wife contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized for several weeks.

Earlier on Monday, Zelenskiy said that his government was considering introducing weekend lockdowns to halt the rise in coronavirus cases while avoiding the economic consequences of a full lockdown.
